Cardiovascular diseases and hypertension are the leading cause of death in America (almost 700,000 deaths in 2021 according to the CDC) even though it is almost completely preventable with healthy diets. One-third of all American adults have high blood pressure, which may lead to organ damage, heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and aneurysms. Here are some ways to prevent and even cure heart disease.

3 things to avoid

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is the direct cause of coronary heart disease. Cholesterol can build up and eventually block your arteries, leading to coronary heart disease and maybe even heart attack. Trans fats and excess saturated fats increase your LDL levels, which is the "bad cholesterol" that builds up, so avoid foods with trans fats or ingredient labels listing something with hydrogenation. Animal products also have high cholesterol content.

Sodium

Vegetables and fruits provide the small and normal amount of sodium people need. Sodium retains water, and too much of it causes the body to increase blood pressure. Most Americans eat double the recommended sodium level daily, which is extremely unhealthy and is likely the reason that almost half of all American adults have high blood pressure. Make sure to avoid processed meats, chicken (which is likely injected with salt), and pizza, which is the highest source of sodium for teens.

Sugar

Excess sugar is known to be bad for you, but what exactly does it do to your heart? Added sugars are everywhere in foods, but too much can cause mainly obesity and inflammation. Obesity leads to higher cholesterol and high blood pressure, which all lead to heart diseases. Inflammation is harmful as well. Chronic inflammation is very dangerous as it may damage your heart and blood vessels. Make sure to stay away from soda. One soda alone could provide more recommended added sugars for the entire day. In fact, almost 300,000 lives could be saved if people stopped drinking so much soda.

Pharmaceuticals aren't your only option to cure heart disease. An overall plant-based diet has been proven numerous times to support a healthy heart. According to a study used by How Not to Die, by Michael Greger, people who followed a vegan diet decreased their risk of high blood pressure by 75%. Make sure to eat foods without too many calories and with high nutritional value. Whole foods such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans are great examples that have effects similar to medications for high blood pressure without harmful side effects. Here are some other foods to consider according to How Not to Die:

Flaxseed is proven to drop blood pressure even more than the most potent blood pressure drugs.

Brazil nuts are proven to drastically lower harmful cholesterol levels. Just four Brazil nuts can improve blood cholesterol for an entire month.

Nitric Oxide relaxes artery muscles, lowering blood pressure levels. Arugula, cilantro, lettuce, basil, and beets are a few common foods rich in nitrate, which is used to produce nitric oxide.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which decrease nitric oxide concentration in the body. Fruits and vegetables are the best source of antioxidants.
